The Fish and Wildlife Service Experienced Services Program was established to create a unique partnership to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies. The Fish and Wildlife ESP connects experienced workers (age 55+) to the Fish and Wildlife Service to provide scientific, technical, and administrative services in support of the Fish and Wildlife Service priority multiple-use related programs and authorities. The experienced workers participating in the Program are referred to as Enrollees and are not employees of FWS or National Experienced Workforce Solutions ( NEW Solutions). NEW Solutions is the ESP Non-governmental organization (NGO) responsible for administrative aspects of the Program, and the Enrollees work under Fish and Wildlife Service direction to assist the Agency staff in carrying out the Fish and Wildlife Service mission. Fish and Wildlife Service ESP Enrollees benefit from the opportunity to keep technical skills current, to access new training opportunities, to engage in gainful project-based positions, and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy and their own financial security. Background security investigation may be required prior to start date. Location, hours and hourly pay are noted in this position description. FWS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary, project-based support. This position is currently funded for approximately 550 total hours working 28 hours per week for a short term project. This position will be performed onsite at the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Reserve in Marion, IL. Local applicants only.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 1 year(s) of experience in visitor services or environmental education preferred. This can include paid or unpaid experience. Previous cash handling experience preferred. OR HS/GED Degree in Education background/public speaking background preferred, but not required.

  • Valid driver?s license required.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel
Duties:

The Visitor Services Technician (ESP) will provide first-line support to our visitors at Crab Orchard NWR.  This role will include greeting and welcoming visitors to the Refuge, providing basic information to visitors, and sale of passes and Duck Stamps. 

  • Customer Service: Greeting and creating a welcoming atmosphere for a diverse population of visitors to the Refuge. Provide basic information on recreational activities and opportunities on the Refuge.   70%
  • Fee Collection: Sale of passes and Duck Stamps to visitors. Cash handling and adherence to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service collection policy required.   10%
  • Site Interpretation: Provide visitors with site history and information on the story of Crab Orchard NWR.   10%
  • Environmental Education: Assist Refuge staff with Environmental Education (EE) programs.   10%

Other:
  • On the job training in specific FWS systems (e.g. POS) will be provided.
  • Government Vehicle Training: Electronic training is required.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Driver safety training is required to use Government vehicles.
  • Physical requirements: Successful candidate must be able to carry packages/boxes up to 20 pounds in weight. Successful candidate must be able to sit/stand for extended periods of time while providing duties at the Visitor Center front desk.
