These experienced professionals provide administrative expertise, facilities management, natural and cultural resource planning, and a broad array of other professional skills that support the National Park Service through the Experienced Services Program (ESP). Positions listed here do not guarantee employment for any definite period. Enrollment in the Experienced Worker Programs administered by NEW Solutions is temporary. The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee is an ?at-will? relationship. This means that an Enrollee is free to terminate enrollment at any time during the enrollment period, and NEW Solutions and the Agency have the right to terminate the relationship with the Enrollee. PLEASE NOTE: An ?Enrollee? is not a federal employee, nor an employee of NEW Solutions. An ?Enrollee? is a participant in a grant program established through a Cooperative Agreement funded by the agency and administered by NEW Solutions. Qualifications:HS/GED Degree with minimum additional experience of 4 year(s) in hazard tree identification and GIS applications OR Previously completed training in ISA and TRAC - Operates and maintains hand tools including handsaws, hand pruners, pole saws, and pole pruners; and power equipment including chainsaws, gas powered pole saws, gas powered back-pack blowers, etc. Operates and maintains specialty equipment including wood chippers to chip brush or stump grinder to remove stumps.

Duties:Enrollee serves as a certified arborist at C&O Canal NHP. The primary purpose of the position is to provide proper care and maintenance of specimen trees and shrubs located within maintained landscapes; and mitigate hazard tree conditions along roadways and trails, and within developed areas such as campgrounds, picnic areas, etc., where the visiting public are invited to come; by performing arboricultural practices and applied arboricultural services
- Diagnoses tree and shrub biotic/abiotic disorders. Identifies the presence of pests and diseases using diagnostic tools. Develops an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan and establishes thresholds to guide treatment options

- Participates in project planning meetings and provides recommendations for construction preservation of trees in accordance with industry standards.

- Performs risk (hazard) assessment of trees to determine the presence of tree defects that have the potential to fail, resulting in personal injury and/or property damage. Rates the tree?s potential risk of failure, provides treatment recommendations, and documents assessment and recommendations using a tree risk assessment report.

- Plants/transplants trees and shrubs using proper plant selection and planting techniques derived from the latest research and technological developments. 10%
- Designs and installs tree support systems including static and dynamic cables, braces, and props to provide additional structural support to a tree in accordance with industry standards. Inspects existing support systems and repairs or replaces them as needed.

- Performs stabilization (including resource protection) of important trees identified as ?significant?
resources in park planning documents such as Cultural Landscape Report (CLR).
